  • Really? But I'm the gook - surely that makes it impossible for me to be racist? ;-)
I've been serious giving thought into creating a global movement to reclaim the word gook and Oriental. ;-)

    Shit! is oriental rasict? Bugger...

Were you the one that arrived to west whilst the rain was basically at it heaviest?!

Anyway talking of rascistisms, is it just me that gets annoyed by rasicists using the wrong racist word?

I was talking to someone that used the word nip (as in Nippon) about someone chinese! When he obviously should have said chinky. Why are so many racists stupid? Oh actually that question kind of answers itself doesn't it.

  • Hello, hello. I'm new. (Go easy on me, please). Not just to LondonFgSs but to cycling in general, but I indeed have the bug. I learned how to cycle about 6 weeks ago or thereabouts and began commuting to work pretty much immediately, albeit rather incompetently (I'm probably one of those nodders that really annoys you on your way into central London). Generally, I do about 30Km a day (sorry about the metric) but it varies as I freelance. --------- I'm enjoying the cycle commute that I am seriously thinking moving farther a field, something I never would have considered before - the words 'close to transport' links are now redundant!

    Wow Cheevil! That's really impressive.

My commute is 20k a day. I know where all the drains are and the traffic lights times so can advise peds that they have time to cross but mostly I tell them not to cross cos I always have priority. I swear a lot, in French.

  • I swear a lot, in French.

when I was in France, I cross the road on purpose to get some french people to released their profanity toward me, it's music to my ears.

  • Ducon!

  • when the french swear, it's like poetry, when the english swear, it's just a ranting of an angry badger.

  • My hero

  • im banging 20 miles a weekday - currently dealing with spd foot - but i love it a coast ride at dawn and dusk. this is what riding is about.

  • Ahhh Captain Haddock, I grew up with Tintin, it was my only link to the real world when I was a kid, couldn't understand people, couldn't understand television, films etc. Tintin comic book make it so much easier for me to understand the story especially with graphic being able to tell what's going on as well.

  • I've also got a few long weekend rides planned for August, which I'm also really looking forward too (although, I realize now probably the wrong thread to bring that up in, ooops.)

please tell me you are not riding with james? i fear for your safety if you are.

  • My hero

You can never have enough of le Capitaine Hadoque swearing.

  • Yesterday, I rode from Fulham to Finsbury Park and it was monsoonal all the way. Best ride I've had so far. Something quite euphoric about riding it the rain when PTB are giving it their all. I say bring it on. I'll take whatever you've got.

But only if I am leaving work of course. If I'm en route I prefer the sun with it's hat on.

And no that wasn't me arriving at West (The Ship?!)
My name's not on the guest list yet, ;-)

Re: Racism - Tell me about it.
I grew up being called a chinky all the time. In fact just the other day going up Highbury Park Road I got called chinky chonky. I was like can you please get it right, dude. I'm a freaking gook, mofo.
And indeed, Oriental is now a no go word. Like ni**er. The correct form is Asian.
    Let's begin the reclamation now!

  • Thanks for the concern, but as a bicycle padawan I have taken the informed and prudent decision to go into training before I elect for such torture, abuse, danger and general epic failure.

Actually, I doing a gentleeesh 40mile ride on Sunday. I've asked a mate to come along who's fitness and riding competency ranks even lower than mine just so I have someone to ridicule on the way and will make me feel better about my own cycling ineptitude.

please tell me you are not riding with james? i fear for your safety if you are.

  • It would not be so impressive if you saw me do it.
I am slow and rather awkward. But I am improving.
Besides, the normal problems noobs have, working out routes bothers me almost as much as riding ineptitude. I just wish I knew where I was going!

Tell me about the swearing. I didn't swear too much BB (before bike).
But now, you should hear me on a minor incline and uphill - I'm like Medea with potty mouth. I turn heads.

  • I've done hard time around Poplar a few years back.

Once, my local news agents ran out of the Sunday Times and so I traipsed up to East India Dock Road (the next closest paper shop). I saw a drunken bum, around 6ft tall shuffle into the shop. There was a big Indian woman manning the till. As soon as he entered she headed his way, man handled him then literally "scruffed" him by the neck (like one does with kittens) and lifted him off his feet and turfed him out. It was very impressive.

After that, I avoided East India Dock Road altogether.

  • as of today i find out that i will be commuting ~6 miles from NW3 to WC2, anyone know the likely time this will take? or the best way to find a route? (i'm not from london) google maps?

  • Try Cyclestreets.net for plotting a route. It's still in beta but already a very good route-finding resource. Report any bugs or glitches you can find to assist the volunteers from Cambridge Cycling Campaign and Camden Cyclists in development.

In traffic, allow half an hour.

Use google maps or bikely.com but trial and error is generally best.

    that is pretty amazing!

thanks for the help, cyclestreets gave me a time of 29 min, so pretty spot on.

  • Bit less than half an hour I'd guess... you might have to muck about with your route a bit to find one which best suits

    Doh... too slow
