Or if you want to use the tool someone could lend you one, save you buying it. I know I've got one of those in my toolbox.

How about dropping in to Bicycle magic?
They are pretty helpful, if you're nice maybe take it off for free!

Do you know what make it is? There are various types of BB which use that type of system but are of different sizes. Is it a Campagnolo BB?

Tommy knows best... I managed to remove a BB that hadn't been touched since the 70's, using the mighty Hammer+Screwdriver ...

Sorry, I'm a little reluctant to try the hammer approach at present!
I've actually had the BB taken out at BLB. It cost me a tenner, but I've had it left out as I'm trying to unseize the seat post, so I guess another tenner to put back in. :(
I'll need to take it out again at some point in the near future as I'm going to have the frame powder coated, so I was thinking about maybe buying a tool.
The BB itself is Sakae it says on it 1.37" x 24T, I have another bike with a Campag BB which looks very similar.
Fox, where are you based if I could borrow that would be fantastic!

I've got Campag tools that I'd be willing to sell, as long as you're happy that they'll fit your BB. I'd sell them for half the price of NOS ones.

Sorry - just had another look and I've got a BB like that in a cupboard, but not the tool. The tool I was thinking of is similar but I don't think it's right.

This is a very handy purchase. I reluctantly spent about £20 on one but have always been really glad I did.

Picture of the tool you need is blocked by my work proxy server- could you link to one in an online shop?
I have quite a few different BB tools, FSA/Shimano/Campag, so may be able to lend you the one you need.

I'm just about to attempt to remove mine. I fear I may be in the shits though because it's an oldish Raleigh.
Can I bypass this

For the hammer and screwdriver approach? Also, NFI what to look for in a new BB. Would just an English threaded one be ok? I don't think it's the dreaded 26 tpi as there isn't an eyelet on the dropout. It does however have one a bit further up on the frame.

Oh. This is disappointing.
I might well be in the need for some cups, ta. Need a whole new BB so I'll see what I can get first.
Cheers matey, will let you know. -

There was also this from a previous thread
You can simply run a standard 24tpi tap through each side of the BB - it does not cut too much metal away, rather it it rejigs the threads to 24tpi, I have done it several times to Raleigh BBs. You will also need to reduce the width of the BB shell - best way is with a BB shell facing tool. You must remember to use the correct taps on each side as the threads are handed ...
Not sure where to start with the '24tpi tap' or the 'BB shell facing tool' however.
Things are never straight forward are they.

See now, it's stuff like this that makes the world a better place.
Cheers mate.
I am looking to buy a bottom bracket tool ASAP suitable for this type of BB:
