Edge would definitely be a MTB, 631 would be about 1994 at a guess (although that means anywhere from about 1991 - 1996).
It might be looking for old Dawes catalogues over at Retrobike or somewhere like that?

thanks tom. it's not clear from the pics he's send me so i thought it might be a tourer of some kind (only close ups of damage and decals, can't see the whole thing in profile) but i guess 90s MTB makes more sense.
EDIT - spent some time on retrobike and it seems, although i can't find an image of the exact model, it must have been a shortlived 631 version of the mtb. up to '95 they seem to have been 501 or 520 and they went to 7005 alu at some point not long after that. looks like it's probably not worth much but it might make a nice commuter hybrid for my friend. cheers again for the pointers.

There were several bikes in the "Edge" line up (akin to how Specialized have several Hardrocks, etc) and only the very lowest of the low would have been 501 and I thought that 520 was a bit too new for them, but could be wrong.
Not that this helps much. I think that it will be a fairly sturdy and rideable frame which would take 700c wheels at a push. It'll make a more than adequate hack, that's for sure.
Sorry I know this is a bit off topic just after a bit of guidance on behalf of a freind.
He's found an old frame in a shed, from the pics he's sent me it appears to be a fairly recent looking Dawes Edge. It has another decal on the downtube that says "Comp". It looks to be a smallish touring frame, definitely Reynolds 631 and in pretty good nick. Whenever i search for "Dawes Edge" though i get endless references to Alu mountain bikes. Comprarably specced touring bikes seem to go by the "galaxy" name now... although they still seem to make a "double-edge" tandem tourer.
Did they change the model names at some point? Anyone know anything about a 631 touring model by Dawes called an Edge?
Cheers.
