  • Just seen what looks like a serious accident on London bridge. Looks like a bus, truck and either a cyclist or Motorbike but either way the person on the bike is badly hurt. Anyone see what happened?

  • My colleague witnessed this, I've just seen the aftermath. Cyclist and bus. Road is closed both ways. Looks awful.

  • The bridge is still closed, had to come over southwark, more info at http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15548494, sounds like the motorcyclist is critical or worse :(

  • "There was a nasty looking collision between a Motorbike and a cyclist this morning, there were bits of the Motorbike over both side of the road and both men down.
It looked like there were buses involved too, including one on the other carriageway."

It's random reports from everywhere. Someone on BR says the cyclist looked ok and the mbiker not so, someone else said the mbiker is critical and the cyclist pretty bad.

Bus ran into mbiker and crashing mbike hit cyclist taking them down.

Whatever. I can only hope that the reports are wrong and their injuries minor.

  • That's nasty, I hope those involved are ok.

  • it was a black cyclist according to the Radar

    Fingers crossed it's nothing critcal

  • i just got wind of this through brother, I hope everyone is okay too, sounds nasty.

  • Does not sound good :(

  • Tiswas: I know I saw the same thing including some sick f**k taking photos!

  • From what I've seen, it seems a Motorcyclist was heading south over the bridge, quite quickly, when a bus pulled out in front of him. The Motorcyclist hit the side of the bus before crashing over the central reservation and colliding with two cyclist and another bus (which was at stationary at a bus stop).

Unfortunately I think there was a fatality but I can't be sure if it was the Motorcyclist or one of the cyclists. I did see one cyclist being taken away in a back & neck harness.

  • The 'sick fuck' taking photo could have been a journalist or blogger, photos of an accident can often help the police judge what happened and help try to avoid repetition of the terrible things that can occur on our streets, don't be so quick to judge. He could have just been a sick fuck though.

  • yeah i rolled past this morning...passing the aftermath the bicycle didnt look too bad front wheel tacoed and split the rim.... motorbike on the other hand was in the centre of the left hand lane on its side with the yellow undercarriage split. fingers crossed.

that part of london bridge is pretty bad as there are 3 lanes that converge into 2 one of which can either go to the embankment underpass or to bank or liverpool st....dodge if you ask me. specially if you dont know the routes too well, or uncertain to which lane you should be in.

  • Was very nasty judging by the aftermath. The bike didn't look too bad but the motorcycle was in bits. Lots of conflicting reports about what happened on the web. Will see if it's on the news.
    Beyond terrible for all concerned.

  • Fingers crossed all involved are ok, it sounds like the cyclist might have got lucky and the motorcyclist took the brunt of it, I hope everyone made it out of this alive.
For those of you who are riding this route, be very careful, its extremely easy to get caught out by cars racing to be "the one in front" when the lanes filter down, I ride this route a lot as I live nearby and i've seen many cyclists get themselves into some pretty dangerous situations by either being too timid and not forcing vehicles to give them space, or just from not anticipating the traffic very well.
For this part of London Bridge I find the best approach is either a flat out sprint across the bridge to try and outrun traffic behind you so you have plenty of room to move around once you get to the bottleneck, then when you get into the section where it filters, plant yourself in the middle of the lane/lanes so vehicles cannot barge past you.
Alternatively if you keep your wits about you you can flick into the left turn only lane before hand where its a single lane instead of the much sketchier "bottleneck" on the right hand side (heading towards Bishopsgate over the Bridge), and then filter back into the 2 lane section heading towards Bishopsgate instead of embankment (if you are heading in that direction).
Or the Brave/stupid/safer option depending on which way you look at it, is to bunnyhop the traffic island in the middle and roll comfortably up between both lanes without being disturbed by traffic.

Good advice - I generally try to take the left-hand route as it gets pretty narrow down the right, though from what I could tell this morning it looked like the accident had happened on the south-bound side and spilled across the road; all the planning in the world is unlikely to prepare you for a motorbike flying across the carraigeway in the wrong direction...

  • Yeah i got caught up in the traffic jam of cyclists heading across london bridge, from what i saw the cyclist's bike was propped up against a bus at the scene and looked to be in one piece (which hopefully means they're ok). Shocking to see things like this though :-s

  • Indeed, in situations like that you just have to do everything you can to get out of the way, even then I think you kind of accept your chances are 50/50.

  • Is there any more news about this? I've tried google, The Evening Standard, The London Paper, The SE1 Forum and everywhere else but absolutely nothing.

A really awful accident. I hope that no one's injuries are life changing and that they all can recover quickly.

  • This is from the BR thread:
"Our offices overlook London Bridge. A motorbike was heading south when a bus pulled out in front of him. He crashed into the side of the bus, which then flung him across the central reservation into a number of cyclists. It's understood one of the cyclists was killed."

    Horrific.

  • This is terrible, my thoughts go out to their family.

  • Oh no.

  • shit.

  • Terrible news if true.

  • Shit news! :-(

    Fuckin buses!
