Oh, another thing - I assume you are using a traditional bottom bracket? If you have a sealed cartridge type you wont be able to check for most of these things. Just buy a new one.
Ive been running the very cheapest shimano one for a year in my mtb, then a year in my fixed and it still runs smooth.
