Any one converted a Raleigh Pioneer Spirit before?

Posted on
  • Complete newbie to converting, managed to pick up the bike for £30,not bad condition, was wondering if the frame was ok for converting into a fixie? and if so, rough guide on how much its going to cost me! (Im on a small budget)

  • Do they come in waves?

A bunch of new folk come on and they are all about posting silly questions without doing some research first, then they all catch on and the next wave of new kids DO utfs, but they don't notice when things have been posted.

Can we study this so that we can predict the patterns?
How about a warning message before anyone in the nursery is allowed to post?

"Wait! Make sure you really want to send this comment. Do you think this is something that someone else might have already asked multiple times? If so, don't post about it again or you will have an angry deaf bob jackson enthusiast grumbling at you.
Have you checked the date on the thread your posting to? If your inquiring about something that was offered for sale more than six months ago, you might want to wait and send a PM (when you are out of the nursery) addressing the fact that you doubt the seller has it anymore, but you thought it was worth a go anyways. Do this or you will have a cranky American woman taking the piss out of you.
If you are certain that the post you are about to submit will not cause people to create tags about you or ridicule you unduly, then post away!"

  • Apologies. Reailse how frustrating it is. I'll take my account off the system, do some swatting, and come back later on in the year hopefully

  • does it have vertical or horizontal dropouts? from a quick google it looks like its a hybrid and has the former, which would make it a pain in the arse for a first conversion...

  • There vertical, but not completly.

Think this is the exact frame! Going to follow this blokes advice, and see how it goes.

  • Horizontal i mean....

  • Ha! grumbling about new people, remember everyone was a n00b once. Im converting a Raleigh alpha sport into a fixie at the moment (got it for £6 at an auction) which is almost exactly the same as yours. Rough guide for price? if you get a new fixie specific rear wheel/sprocket/lockring you'll be looking at about £100ish, second hand could be done for half that easy. Have fun.

  • Thanks pj, much apretiated

  • Looks like it'd make a sturdy fixed gear, it does come down to personal preference but the Raleigh Pioneers are hybrid bikes, which wouldn't be my first choice for a conversion as they're more likely to have slacker geometry (think sit up and beg).

Buy, or build a 700c wheelset for it, and see how it goes, if the worst comes to the worst you can still use that wheelset on another frame.

    Lastly, read this: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html
...and if you come across a problem use google and forum searches.

  • Cheers ott, ill get on to it soon and post some pics!

  • has pioneer spirit ever been done before?

    hehehe!

  • No one have converted a bicycle before, you might be the first!

  • Bad choice of subject me tinks then yes? I shall learn from my mistakes

  • don't feel bad, we are all just a bunch of nice people who like to take advantage of situations like this one. do it it should be fine, i converted a record sprint once and it turned out to be a nice ride.

    what tubing as it got?
    (+1) what drop-outs?
think about how much it will cost, there's no pint throwing money at something that will cost more than a decent otp. blar blar blar

Buy stuff of here to help the build !

  • Gwhit do you know anything? Forums arnt for advise they are for bosting about what you know and what your ride is, Not for helping out others, I think you should forget converting a bike and get something else like a bmx,

But seriously id go for it convert it seems a good frame think should make a easy conversion pretty straight forward, shouldnt cost too much either , beg borrow steel etc, even sll your body to fund it,
