Try putting the word out amongst your friends/family that you're looking for an old racing bike, you never know who might have one sitting in their shed, also try your local freecycle group.
If you can get your hands on one then you have almost everything you need to build your first fixie, the only thing you'll need to get is a fixed rear wheel. Then you'll have something unique that you built yourself, rather than just another off the peg bike.

If you're in London, you might want to visit the Waltham Forest bicycle recycling scheme on a Saturday. I have a friend that works there sometimes. You can get an inexpensive bike and convert it. Plus, they let you use their tools and workshop to work on your bike if you want to make any changes or whatever. I think they only charge £3 or something for that, and they have all sorts of old parts lying around.

This will be my first road bike / Single speed, havent been around for a while as I have been working on another project (vw beetle) but while collecting some parts for the car I spotted this and took it off the fellas hands, seems to be a good fit, wheels are stuffed, but everything else seems straight enough.
Anyone have any advice for me? As far as I know its a peugeot frame and thats about it.

Ride it and get a feel for it.
Take it to a local bike shop, get them to look it over, see what they say.
Tool around on here and pick up things that you think you might like/look nice.Keep quite until you know what you want/need or risk more of the above posted forum ire.
UTFS.Oh, and welcome, I guess?

site boss please introduce a one pound donation to the forum fund to start threads.
Do they come in waves?
A bunch of new folk come on and they are all about posting silly questions without doing some research first, then they all catch on and the next wave of new kids DO utfs, but they don't notice when things have been posted.
Can we study this so that we can predict the patterns?
How about a warning message before anyone in the nursery is allowed to post?"Wait! Make sure you really want to send this comment. Do you think this is something that someone else might have already asked multiple times? If so, don't post about it again or you will have an angry deaf bob jackson enthusiast grumbling at you.
Have you checked the date on the thread your posting to? If your inquiring about something that was offered for sale more than six months ago, you might want to wait and send a PM (when you are out of the nursery) addressing the fact that you doubt the seller has it anymore, but you thought it was worth a go anyways. Do this or you will have a cranky American woman taking the piss out of you.
If you are certain that the post you are about to submit will not cause people to create tags about you or ridicule you unduly, then post away!"plus one

My first bike was a Raleigh Grifter, grey with a big honky horn like a clown has.
God knows where it is now.

Tynan ate it.

I still have my Grifter, it is in my parents garden.
I would imagine that it will probably survive for the next hundred thousand years as it is made out of inch think steel.

My Grandfather repainted it blue and applied "BMX" stickers, he also sourced a black and yellow checked handlebar and top tube pad for it.
Needless to say this is because I really wanted a BMX at the time.
I ended up with something indistinguishable from a proper BMX if you were a) blind and b) could heft the 3,000lb weight of the thing.

My first bike was a Raleigh Burner. I spent about 50% of my childhood on it. Wish I still had it - same as the one below:

when i was younger i thought i've give my dad a present for his b'day by repainting his classic raleigh racer with house paint ...he wasn't that pleased. i thought it was a good idea. i then tired to turn it fixed and strip the paint back - the house paint was a f.cker to remove.
I think my only hope not to end up with a Unipac/Create is to wait til I find a s/h on here/gumtree/craigslist/fleabay - Or is some amazing sale appears like with the Tricross at £275!
