I have just inherited a bike which sounds similar.
I can confirm the gears at the back have an extra piece attached rather than part of the frame.
Mine has the SE20 badge on the front but no other info that can indicate the exact model, from limited investigation this seems to indicate a mid to late '50s frame.
It is designed for gears as the lever is attached to a part of the frame specifically designed for it.
Sorry for the non technical speak here, I am not very clued up on cycling.
