I found a six-sided nut which slips over the spindle thing. I't still doesn't fit, but the hex face seems to hold the brake steady enough for me to fit it, tighten it and adjust it, so hopefully I can ride it too.
Now if I hadn't just snapped the sodding seatpost clamp...
