I read the link above. I was talking about a fuly assembled bike with pedals fitted etc. I think in order for it to pass bs 6102 you'd have to suppy it fitted with a properly adjusted rear brake even if it was fixed. Giant were very specific about it when they stopped putting a freewheel on some of their bowerys.

I fully admitt I could be wrong I'll check with cytech tomorrow or something.

  • I fully admitt I am wrong
    .

  • I've seen a lot of single speed riders of late only with a front brake.

I hope they aren't doing it just because of the aesthetic.

Of course they are. It's the only reason to do it.

  • It certainly used to be but check it out. The phrase in the Highway Code used to be something like "2 independent braking systems operating on different wheels" The fixed sprocket counts as one and the front brake the other. That's why you have a front brake not a rear one.

  • Of course they are. It's the only reason to do it.

Don't even get me started on that one, the stupid twats!
There are too many "I want my bike to look like a fixie but I lack the cycling skill to pilot an actual fixed gear bike, so i'm just going to take my back brake off to look cool" numpties around.

See my multiple threads/comments on this subject matter!

  • lol, what makes you think they lack the skill? Perhaps they just prefer a freewheel.

    Stinks of elitism.

  • If they prefer a freewheel then get the back brake in place otherwise change to fixed. Riding only front brake on ss is against Darwin's theory of evolution/self-preservation.

  • It's not legal to have a front brake only on a SS.

  • I refer you to my previous thread/comments, I cannae be assed to repeat myself.
Suffice to say I have seen a few of these numpties launch themselves over the bars because they are clearly unable to control the bike properly the way they have it set up.

  • I was referring specifically to crazy james implying that someone on a freewheel didn't have the 'skills' to ride a fixed gear.

I agree front brake only on a freewheel isn't legal/good/safe.

  • Hahaha! WAC!

"Most sorts of cycle are required to have at least two efficient braking systems, by which the front wheel (or wheels) can be braked independently of the rear wheel (or wheels). This means that if there are two wheels at the front or rear, the relevant system must act on the pair. It also means that the combined operation of front and rear brakes from one lever is not allowed except as an extra braking system: additional to the two independent front and rear braking systems required by this law. Apart from saying that a brake that acts directly on a pneumatic tyre shall not be deemed to be in efficient working order, these regulations do not define how the brakes are operated (by hands, feet or maybe even the teeth?) or how they work. A lot of words are nevertheless devoted to wheels that cannot rotate independently of the pedals (i.e. no freewheel), the effect of which is that a fixed wheel drive counts as a braking system – on that wheel or wheels."

    But:

    Enforcement

"Any constable in uniform is empowered to stop a cyclist and test the cycle for compliance with these regulations, and to enter the premises where a cycle is kept if it has been involved in an accident up to 48 hours previously"

"Ouch, that hurt. Anyway, time to upload it to Youtube."

    Why?
