Arghh please don't start 'indoor climbing' as a hobby, indoor climbing centres should be used as a training aid when it's too cold and wet to get outside. I know the South East is shit as far as crags go but once you do star climbing please go outside and do some real climbing, you will enjoy it so much more than going up and down a big piece of ply with some multicoloured plastics blobs all over it.
Heh, do you know of any places outdoors in London that's good for that? I only got the boulder in Shoreditch...

Rock climbing usually involves getting from the bottom of the giant face of rock to the top of it and last time I checked London has a distinct lack of fuck off walls of rock. Unfortunately you've got a good few hours sitting in a car if you want to get to good crags. Southern sandstone (around Tunbridge Wells) is probably closest but that's pretty limiting (Max height is roughly 10m, no leading, can only climb when it's dry).

Well I have disabled railcard... so will look into it. Thanks.
I would greatly appericate a partner though for all this. Easier?

If you expect anyone to carry your wheelchair up the climbing wall for you - then you have another thing coming.
Jesus Christ, you disableds think you can wave your card and do what you want.

... I don;t have a wheelchair, feel free to hold my hearing aid up though!
Id better not mention other benefits I get from being deaf...

All disableds* have a wheelchair, it's no good lying.
*except for the mentals, who are held in cages.

growler is in a cage with only a computer for accessing the outside world

Theres a shadowy night climbing scene in london, comprised largely of industrial access climbers and tree surgeons. So what if london doesn't have fuck off walls of rock. It has an almost infinite supply of very climbable walls. Many large buildings have anchors on the top edges as well so can be roped etc as well. I imagine its filthy, covered in pigeon shit and lots of jagged edges etc
I have no idea if theres a night climbing forum but i know a couple and have seen em do their thing. This book ftw

Climbing is weird.

Climbing is for poofs.
Is that what you meant Balki?
-
• #42
Not at all... I just reckon its one of them sports that evolved from kids just messing around, and then people who couldnt play real sports started to take it seriously but still look like overgrown children. A bit like polo, really.

If it helps I also play ping pong to a high standard.

i go to the Mile End wall because i'm shite with ropes and its about 8 mins on the bike from my house. another fixie-skidder type who i think is on here somewhere (called andy and has very blonde hair - don't know his forum name) goes to both.
hmm, that was a distinctly unhelpful post. meh. back to work.

Cool.
Have heard good things about the monkey room at mile end. Should come give it a try some time.
Picked up a frame from someone on here up at the castle as well t'other week so there are more of us weird, overgrown children around. The other thing i've noticed about climbing is how it's deeply intertwined with the skinny/veggie/vegan/dreadlock/super friendly section of society....
Def a sport for those who like to think while exercising. My should was duly fucked today at work due to not warming up at all yesterday and trying to do way more than i should after 8months off.

yeah the monkey room is good fun. after a year of climbing i still can't get across the roof though.
and as a skinny, vegetarian who until a few months ago had dreadlocks, i agree with you 100%. there's the odd prick, but most are pretty cool.

I too count many such people among my friends. Some dude made a sarky comment amount me buying coffee and chocolate at the cafe yesterday. Grr....
Roofs are still a closed book to me, just managed a short(6ft) roof section in the tunnel at the castle once. The tunnel is gone now to make for one big roofed space open on one side maybe 8ft deep and 30ft wide, with 1 or 2 features projecting down from the ceiling. Looked at the routes and it's a pretty pro section with little to get you started on. Maybe have to go on a quiet afternoon when the hardcore aren't about.
Kill two birds with one stone by playing on the velodrome and the climbing walls at Calshot, they're in the same ex-aircraft hangar. There's a dry ski slope in there too, to give you an idea of the size of the hangar.
