Books - What are you reading?

  • Anyone know where I can download free books to read?

    The library?

  • The library?

Had bad experience with my library. The two local ones here, there's a guy who works there, and he managed to get my full name, address and sent me a stalkerish type letter. Having phoned the company up and showed the letter they still didnt fire him.

So yeah Ive avoided going back ever since.

So I tend to swap books with people, get unwanted ones or go to the charity shop.

  • I'm still having difficulty reading. I was doing fine, then I went to secondary school, and completely lost the urge.

Things improved once I left and went to The University Of Death, but then I taught English for a while and actually went to a real university (till I got bored and dropped out), which has killed all reading urges once more. Ironic when half the time I was meant to be helping people with reading difficulties.

Now I'm writing again. I don't mean these quasi-synchronous words. I mean narrative fucking verse in your contorted human faces.

It's fun. In general. But in this instance, it's fun and cycling orientedatededided. There's a good chance I could die before finishing it. Should that be motivating? I'm not sure it matters. Motivation doesn't really get me going anymore.

When I picked up my son from nursery today (he's 2), he was handed his daily sheet; a form that lists what he's ingested, and other exciting nuggets. I asked what it said. He scanned the page and replied, "A, B, C, X, Y, Z".

It's all so mechanical, and I'm callous enough to suggest that, fundamentally, it will always remain that way.

  • Sod all that shite, you need to get your head into some Dan Brown mate, it'll blow your mind.

Who's that? Da Da Vinci ting?

  • Don't call me mate. Matess.

  • Just read- Treasure Island (really good)

Now reading - Philosophy made simple (still quite complicated)

  • ps kung fu hustle avatar?^^

  • Dunno if it's been discussed here before but I'm into the last pages of We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Brilliant book, dark as fuck - one to read if you're thinking about having children...

Can you explain Zizek's 'The Parallax View' to me? I tried reading it, got massively confused after the introduction and filed it back in the bookshelf intellectual section.

  • I remember enjoying the film. And I've used the word 'parallax' in some lyrics:

"I'm feeling time-lapse process my synapse,
A sonic parallax to keep the tracks relaxed."

So as you can see, I'm not qualified to comment on Zizek.

  • Brideshead Revisited...

"He lit his cigar and sat back at peace with the world; I, too, was at peace in another world than his. We both were happy. He talked of Julia and I heard his voice, unintelligible at a great distance, like a dog's barking miles away on a still night."

Haha, I did finish my Masters in Philosophy in Poland where Zizek is practically unknown. Let me read the book and I will go back to you.

ps. Have you got 'intelectual section'? ;)

  • Yeah, its where all my philosophy books sit gathering dust, but you know, owning them is enough to make me seem clever.

  • I understand the point ;) Books are like fetish. I realized that I wand to possess them but don't really reed them. Now Idecided read all of the stuff which I store on the bookshelf and give them away (except ONE).

If I find something enough snobish, with the good name or title, I will post it to Manchester ;)

  • For the Zizek fans: this is very good. It's a documentary in seven parts; the other six are linked down the side on the youtube page.

    YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

    Anyway.

I just finished re-reading Lolita. It's absolutely devastating. I know this sort of statement is next to meaningless, but I think it has to be in the running for the finest novel of the twentieth century.

    You sick fuck.

  • You sick fuck.

  • Want to hear my views on Rofl Waldo Emerson?

  • Want to hear my views on Rofl Waldo Emerson?

    No.
But if you have anything to say about Rohloff Waldo Emerson, I'm all ears.

  • Ha! You have trumped me Ms Attack.

  • That is something I will put on my otherwise fairly blank CV.

  • I'm not sure that my name on a CV is the password to your dream job but knock yourself out.
Got a cheap copy of Janine di Giovanni's Madness Visible yesterday and have just noticed it's a signed copy. That goes some way to making up for having shat myself 30 seconds after I got out of bed this morning.
