Answered my own question thanks to trusty Sheldon. It's called an adaptor claw apparently and that led me to this thread: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread22839.html for anyone else who might be interested.
I'm helping build a bike for a friend and she wants a single chainring with some gears on the back but the old carlton frame has no gearhanger brazed on, just a horizontal dropout. Is it possible to get a bolt-on gear hanger, I seem to remember cheap rear mechs with thier own hangers but I wanted to fit a better mech to go with an 8 spd campag wheel I'm donating. Any ideas?
