Cheers Rocker. I don't think they fit on MKS sylvan's though do they.

powergrips on sylvans are shit mate. I think power grips are shit overall and gave my mine away but if you're intent on using them i'd say use them on bmx pedals. the jol straps look really good
-
• #29
Hmm, would like something. Was trying to do it on the cheap but maybe it is a better option to get the pedals as well.
Why are they shit on the sylvans? -
• #30
Because sylvans are shit pedals as well, there I said it, not everything NJS is made of Gold!
Bmx pedals can take a lot of abuse, a lot more than sylvans thats for sure, they are also wayyy more comfy.
The whole point of powergrips/Jol's straps is that you need a wide platform pedal to make best use of them, since by spreading the load over a wider area across your foot/the pedal, this increases the amount of leverage you have, this also makes skidding/stopping require less effort, you'll be amazed at the huge difference switching to Gurney (JOL's) straps and bmx platforms, the polo guys love them and loads of trick riders are switching over to these straps or horizontal mounting straps on bmx pedals....its the way forward man! -

Ha, well thanks for bringing me in to the future.
That totally makes sense actually. I knew there wouldn't be a cheap option.
Off to scour the virtual rubbish bins for some cheeky bmx pedals then.Nice one mate.

streetphire.co.uk is pretty good for cheap bmx parts, if platini read half the posts on there though I think he would curl up into a ball, and rock back and forth in a dark corner somewhere...illiterate would be a polite way of describing most of the members ;)

I heard Archie's Grobags might just have something up his sleeves again too? ;)

• #34
O RLY.....?
No seriously, i'm intrigued :)

There's more than one way to skin a cat. :)
I still believe in the diagonal 'twist to tighten' principle, so they'll be different to Jol's and Chicago wigs.

Cool, really interested to see these, your take on the powergrips were really nice, I always thought it was a shame you never started producing them properly.
-
• #37
well there will be no bolts/screws/or permanent fixings on these ones.
Totally different to the last ones and adjustable from little chinese ladies to sasquatch. -
• #38
Definitely interested. Where do I sign?
-
• #39
On JOL's list...mine will be a while....i need my test bunny to see how quickly they can be wrecked through proper use first. :)

has anyone come up with a version of these with ratchet style adjustment, for me ratchets are the easiest thing to tighten up whilst on the move, so my 2p is they could work quite well with this kind of strap, although they are a bit tricky to loosen....
im thinking of something like one of the on a snowboard binding.
-
• #41
Problem with ratchets is that its yet another thing that can be damaged in a crash, which happens a lot in polo and tricks/freestyle.
-
• #42
Yep.
Although you'll need some washers for the back, as the gap there is too big for the washer that comes with the set. I also used a flat panel (like a massive square washer) from by plastic toe cups to make the connection more substantial.
Good for tricks (super quick bail factor), but nothing compared to clipless for riding around and skidding.

this style of retention is fine, i use em on my commuter bike. but when it comes to my roadies and track bikes clipless is the only way to go imo
did take a bit of patience getting into the straps, but ya workit out soon enuff
-
• #44
the whole idea is that they inherently tighten due to the diagonal strap- no need for ratchets
-
• #45
well... i like ratchets.

+100
Sylvans = POS, i bought some and then spun them in my hand the bearings are like sand paper -> truly dreadful imo i only like clipless, but on MTB Clipless and flats, i havent tried JOLs straps but im very tempted to buy some BMX pedals and try em out, they look the shiz!waits for grammar nazi to come and point out 100 mistakes

Power Grips are still my favourite of all retention systems I've tried, It's just such a shame the hardware lets them down. I've managed to bodge/bolster mine up with a few hardware store finds but that can only last so long.
BTW I would gladly test ride some prototypes whilst couriering ;)

+1 on the guinea pig Scot. :)

I've been using Power grips with incy MKS pedals for a long time on two bikes. I wouldn't use anything else, the convenience is too great. I've taken to wearing cons all the time, since you need to reconfigure them if you use drastically different sized shoes.
Mine have held up really well, I'm surprised at how robust they are. Make sure not to use them with grippy pedals or you'll struggle to get your foot in.
