cycling past buckingham palace i jumped a red light - had looked both ways and there was no one in sight.
at the next junction a police car pulled up alongside me, "if you get hit after running a red light you don't have any defence, though we did see you look both ways."
me "i know and i appreciate your advice"
conversation continued up to the next set of lights, they were actually quite cool, and were clear that they had not pulled me over because I had looked properly and was not taking any real risk. we also chatted about dangers to cyclists and all agreed that bus lanes and cycle lanes are generally more of a hazard than benefit. we joked how the fine is so minimal that my interest is probably not avoiding a £30 fine but staying alive.
we both had a mutual respect, and had observed the situation and looked at the bigger implications me doing the rlj, them just having an informal natter with me.
my only regret was actually doing an rlj in sight of the old bill.
