True, its just whether or not you want to learn from people who can play.

Only if you hold a West London Invitational and only send invites to teams in West London. -
• #33
There are no teams in West London...
-
• #34
There are definitely no groups of three players worth calling a team.
-
• #35
it's going to be easy next league with the west, good
-

We'll call up an oligarch and buy some teams. That's the west way.

I might be interesting in helping with the girl contingent numbers.
What's special about polo bike though? Are they cheaper built ones that you don't mind getting scuffed up? -
• #43
You can play on any bike to start with... but most people end up building a bike specifically for polo, not so much cheaper (some have spent loads on their polo bikes) but hardier.
Also lower gearing so you have good acceleration from standing (assuming fixed or single speed, derailers are just another part to break), generally flat handlbars (as drops can get tangled)... More spokes on the wheel the better and usually thick profile rim (like velocities) both because wheels can get a lot of punishment... brake lever (if you have one) on your off hand side as your other hand is on the malet...
Lots of people have their own ideas of what's good, there's a polo bike thread that has pictures of what people have built up...

After watching the euros i'm real keen on having a go. Trouble is i'm only really in town on weekends.
Might try to give the 15th of August session a go if its still on?
Any possibility of borrowing a bike cause i think my gearing is too high and I can't face the dropout snapping again...

Come along on the 15th Ronnald, there'll be bikes there to use. You'll need a helmet. We'll supply the mallet.
-
• #46
^ Can i use any old helmet or do I need one of those bern jobs?
-
• #47
Ha ha, it doesn't need to be bern, just a regular cycle helmet. If you don't have one, bring a cap and we'll see if we can find you a loaner.
(also, there's a couple of Bern ones left over that are for sale at a good discount - pm me if you're interested).
-
• #48
All the bern helmets are gone! If you want to try polo, find yourself any cycling helmet and bring it along. If you don't have your own bike to play on, we should be able to lend you one on the day, and we'll definetely have spare mallets. That's all you need. Check here for the Play Sport London sessions, or just come along to our regular throw-ins by checking the polo today thread.

The next sessions are this coming Saturday 15th from 1pm to 5pm at Downham and next Wednesday 19th from 7.30pm to 10pm at Newington.
We need volunteers, as before, 5 folk including 2 CRB checked. I'll bring the waivers and the lovely T-shirts. (I would bring a bike and mallet too, but they got nicked. Did i mention that? Yes, i'm bitter)
