  • 55/56 will be too big

    You'll need 52/53...54 max

    I dunno, I'm riding a 53cm, I'm 5"7 and I feel I need a longer TT.

  • Maybe the Guy Does not have the time or the tools to do the job to flame him down for wanting something is just unfair,i have built loads of sub 200 fixed bikes but then again i have the time to find the stuff,as for lazy half you London folk can't be bothered to post a fucking handlebar, and to use the North South divide is just bullshit.
The fixed scene maybe not as big in the north but hey we have some of the worlds best fixed riders living up north.

    Baws. I'm 5'6" and I always ride bikes between 52 and 54.

  • 5'8"

    Fucking midget

  • Not by my reckoning, Dov.

  • i'd rather have a track frame but it really don't matter

Lol £200 will only just get you a track frame. . . not a whole bike, but yeah just get a cheapo 70s road bike strip all the crap off and put fixed wheel on the back

  • Stop saying fixie!

  • Fixie

  • Wixie

  • I'm quite intrigued by the prospect of being beaten away by the Taylors.

  • You will definitely be able to pick up a whole fixed bike (converted road frame) if you bide your time and keep your eyes peeled. Seen plenty go on eBay for less.

And actually I don't think you can fix up a bike for much less than £200 yourself. A half-decent old road bike is actually more like £70-100, a rear wheel is probably going to set you back £50, the chainline might not work with your old bb so might need a new one, possibly a new chain... So, Ldngrrl, back to bed until you have known the joy and pain of a) building a bike and b) riding fixed.

  • Can the lad not ask like?

  • if you don't ride fixed you're officially not part of the scene so fuck off you cunts. and you will be banned.

I think this is uncalled for.

Most threads that start out with new people looking for something (like a cheap new bike) aren't met with that much enthusiasm, and it's not too hard to understand why. If someone wanted to sell a bike that worked for him, they would have put it up in classifieds.
As for building bikes all the time for less then 200, I can only hope that it's because you are buying in bulk.

  • I reckon for that much you could build an alright bike. I was lucky, I got a decent-ish 80s peugeout for £30

mine WAS going to be <£100, but new tyres kind of pissed all over that a bit, and now my BB has started making funny noises so I think it's time to look at that too. (if I can get it out of the frame) this is where it probably begins to cost

All I need is a rear wheel now, if anyone has a cheap-ish one or would like to swap for a really shiny Super Champion front wheel, that would be awesome

  • If you got a bike where most of the bits on it were ok for less than £150, then bought a new rear wheel for around £50, and it had decent tyres, BB, no major spacing issues and the front wheel wasn't buckled or the fork weren't bent, then it would be not too hard to build it under £200.

But most of the bikes that come into my shop are coming in with one of the above problems.

Well your not going to see a bike that does not have problems are you to be fair if your job is fixing them.I

  • I can't believe this has caused such a shit storm. If you're patient you can build bikes on the cheap and still have fun, then just change bits as they break/you get more money.

Ed, hippy et al are right about it being easier to get a nice 531 frame out of london (it's ridiculous here at the moment), just hit the car boots/jumbles or look in local classifieds etc.. if you're looking for track(ish) geom then maybe try to find an old TT frame or find a frame that is slightly too small for you, then tweak the saddle height/tilt and stem/bars set up till its right.

  • dunno if anyone is interested but i did in fact end up scrabbling my own build together. it came to just over £200, and i got the wheels off a road bike for free (obviously i had to rebuild the rear with a fixed hub). repainted the frame myself.
