I have just been for a drink with an old friend (publisher) who made up the name 'Kaiser Chiefs' and gave it to them
I think you'll find it's actually the name of a south african football club with the Z changed to an S
Kaiser Chiefs were named after the club because Lucas Radebe, a former player of Kaizer Chiefs, captained Leeds football club, which the band support.

Yes, I didn't word what I said very well, it was this guy's idea to call them the 'Kaiser Chiefs' - he suggested it to them and they liked it and used it.
Similarly my publisher friend did not make up the name 'Guernica' - he just thought it would be another good name and suggested it.
So, I should have said he was the one who 'gave them their name' rather than actually 'made the name up'.
Kaiser Chiefs were named after the club because Lucas Radebe, a former player of Kaizer Chiefs, captained Leeds football club, which the band support.
I have this story on very good authority and from a first hand account, this guy (James) worked with them for years, I have known him since 1997, he really helped them along, they would simply not have made it big without his work, he is thanked on their first album Employment (I think he is either the very first name or right toward to top of the - 'big thanks to' . . list)
I don't doubt the Leeds connection is real, but if asked in an interview where your name comes from - no band is ever going to say - 'oh, our publisher at Universal thought of the idea' - not very sexy ! Perhaps it was James who saw the Kaiser Chiefs / Lucas Radebe conection and suggested the name to them based on the link ?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
EDIT - found the sleeve notes on line !! (he is first to be thanked).
