*"CAMPAGNOLO HS-01CO CHORUS/CONTAX HEADSET
The HS-01CO is the headset sold with the Campy Chorus grouppo of parts. It was also sold as the 1" size in the Icarus and Centaur groups of mountain parts, both of which have been discontinued by Campy for 1994. The HS-01CO is also referred to as the Contax headset. The Contax headset is very similar to the Record but lacks the four grease injection ports. The headlock nut is made of forged, then machined aluminum alloy. Four precise cuts across the top create the grip surfaces for the wrench. A groove around the inner lip of the nut is filled with an O-ring that makes a stem seal, keeping contaminants out. The threads are cut nicely and the head key washer (stamped from .08" steel plate) recesses into the bottom of the headlock nut. The upper cup is again forged from aluminum, the threads for the steerer and the wrench surfaces are machined. A precision cut Black colored steel race is pressed into the cup. There is no post-color polishing of the steel race. The upper cone race is made of steel, machined to make more perfect the original work, then chromed. There is an O- ring seal within a groove around the circumference of the upper cone race. More care seems to be given the lower bearing assembly race surfaces. The lower cup is forged of aluminum then machine de-burred. A Black steel race is pressed into this lower cup, with the actual bearing surface polished after being colored Black. The fork crown race, made of steel is chrome plated, then has its contact surfaces machined afterward. The interior has been precisely ground to make it fit tightly and squarely around the base of the steerer. It's surface, where the ball bearings revolve has also been ground and polished after the chrome plating. Like the upper cone race, there is an O-ring seal within a groove around the skirt of the race. The Contax relies on twenty 3/16" steel ball bearings held in a steel retainer for the upper and lower bearings.
