I'd be interested in the verdict on this too as a friend is looking for something to lock up her new £30 bike, and doesn't fancy spending £30 on a Kryptonite.

For a 30 squids beater even a tesco's d-lock should do. This sterling lock is huge and i think it would be an overkill for a bird to carry a 2kg lock around. Anyway if she buys it I am sure it will give adequate protection to that bike. I am just not sure weather that lock can do for something in £200+ bracket :-)

http://www.sterlinglocks.com/acatalog/linklockdlocksheavydutychains.pdfToo cheap to be good, seems to be a fair point. I'm wondering if the steel is hollow, but "case hardened". That way, the manufacturer could get away with using less steel, but still give the enticing dimension of an 18mm thickness.
My guess, at that price, its originating from China. That's not a bad thing, but the steel base looks very insignificant. Were I a thief, I'd attack the base rather than the shackle itself. Still, at that price, its better than cable locks for example.
I'll email the supplier (Phoenix) and ask the weight. That will tell if its solid all the way through. I'd be expecting a weight of 2.5+kgs. Yes, heavy, but all 18mm U-Locks would be. I'll put in a "pending" section, of the Locks That Work thread.

As a note, the original question could have been asked in any of the several LOCKS threads.

Making it out of tube would probably be more expensive than bar - my guess would be the most likely problems would be either a feeble actual lock portion or crappy heat-treat on the steel making it either brittle or bendy.

Judging by the picture you could probably still pop that lock open with a small crowbar, even if it is 18mm.
Or even a bic pen?
PS I have the ABUS 16mm (square section) granit extreme (RRP 170quid), it weighs 3.0kg, so you could rate the sterling based on relative weight.
Hi all,
I just spotted some 18mm d-lock, sterling branded.

Has anyone seen some of their locks and if so what are they like?
It seams to be to cheap to be good.
