I did that with The Big Red One, for about an evening.
I got the bike free, liked it, but bits started breaking and I couldn't be bothered to fix them because I'd planned a strip-down and rebuild. So I'd been running it in toppestmost gear for ages after the gear cable snapped and I got to like it.
So then I decided to remove the drag from old deraileurs, shorten the chain etc. and took it for a test ride.
Which was when I found the chain line wasn't quite perfect.
I found that out, because the bike tried to skip down a gear, larger cog, no room from the newly-shortened chain, that pulled the not-completely-tightened-to-death rear wheel across til it rubbed on the inside of the chainstay and stopped dead, with me standing up, full weight on the pedal at the time.
