I run CXP33s on my road bike and they are very light and strong. Black rims and black spokes. CXP33s are much better than open pros, but then they do cost more!
According to bloke in Condor, you shouldn't be able to break a wheel with them on. I have - twice - proved him wrong, but then I ride my road bike more like a mountain bike ...

What is this bollocks?
CXP33s are NOT light rims, nor are they BETTER than Open Pro for any reason other than perhaps stiffness, being deeper rims. If you're going to provide info try and make it factual.
For the OP: I have both of these rims on different wheelsets and they are both fine. The CXP33s feel sluggish but it's an unfair comparison as they are built on 36H whereas my Open Pro set are on 32H. They would both be totally fine for road use. If you're not heavy and don't need/like/want the deeper section I'd go for Open Pros.

i got my goldtec/cxp33's directly from betd. it's cheaper from them, for some reason they do not charge for the build.
a good strong solid set for the road (until some wanker in a white van smashes into the back of you along the embankment, totally tacoe's your rim) -

what the man from down-under say.
OPs for pure road use, a little bit cheaper than cxp33s, not much but enough to get yourself a pie and a pint

I had OPs on my geared bike 'til it got stolen, and found them to be light and strong, as others have said here. I guess I'm thinking of CPX33s more for the look to be honest, although I don't have anything close to a HHSB.
The 33s are heavier, arguably stronger and slightly more aero. If I went for these i would probably go 32h fr and rr, black hubs and rims with silver spokes
The OPs are a known quantity to me in as much as I have used them before, and I would probably go 32h fr, 36h rr, pewter hubs with silver spokes and rims
I weigh 12 stone so thats not really too much of an issue.
In as much as Goldtech building them up, anyone else used them and did you have any problems?
Just thinking out loud here at the moment and appreciate all your thoughts so far.
Peace
Kurt

Hey Kurt, go for OP - mine are great, get Paul Mepham at Harry Perry to build for you, he did mine, and they are rolling a treat still. (as is everything else he has ever built for me)

i hald goldtech (betd) build me up a set of open pros (36h fr & rr - i plan to tour on them) about 6 months ago. still going strong and they've been used every day. would recommend them. did take about two weeks to arrive though so check the lead time when you order.

What's the difference in intended usage between OP and CPX33s. I mean the OP is a quality road rim, is the 33 more track oriented or is it just styling? The Mavic site isn't very clear on this.

CXP33s are more aerodynamic than Open Pro at the expense of weight.
But at the speed most people ride around London it's irrelevant. -

i feel chastened by the angry man! haha. I have both open pros and cxp33 wheels and thought the diff in weight was the rims. just checked and indeed 700cc open pros weigh 435g and cxp33s are 470g. I'll just have to go faster to gain aero advantages!

Hmmm, I think I see CXP33s in my future, just need to sort the colours. I'm thinking pewter hubs with silver spokes and rims, or all black. Decisions,decisions...

Open Pros are really great rims, people seems to don't pay attention on it here just because they have a OK price and everyone and everywhere have them for sale...
Same thing doesn't have out of Europe where they costs a fortune (about £50 a rim)
Also, they make the Ceramic one which works very well for wet/winter conditions...

I have been searching this site for a few days now looking for some tips on a new wheel set for my off the peg surly steamroller. I have had it a year now and new wheels seem like the best first upgrade. I have a couple hundred quid (maybe a bit more if i can wrestle my wallet off wifey) for the task. so far it looks like miche/open pro or cpx33. all that lovelyness above has thrown me.
wot say y'all -

wot say y'allAs Roberto says, you can't go wrong with OpenPros, I run them on my Steamroller. If you're feeling flush, Ambrosio Excellence are beautiful road rims and fairly rare, definitely worth a look.

This thread needs serious update, I think in matters of database more than wheelporn. From different lacings on different rims, hubs, etc... get posting your wheels.
-
• #23
those araya/da are exactly what i'm looking for, how much did the build cost?
-
• #24
not mine..hahaha..i wish.
But you don´t get the DA less than £120...and these rims are only for sale by alexsccycles, on the bay or on the site they go for £150..... with shipping from japan.
Because I like shiny new things for my bike, and because I have some not so good wheels on my bike, I'm going to bite the bullet on payday and order a pair of Goldtech hubs (32h fr, 36h rr) in pewter. I cant decide what rims to go for though, Open Pro or CPX33. I was thinking silver rims and spokes if I go Open Pro, or black rims with silver spokes if I go CPX33. I'm also not sure whether to get Goldtech to build up the wheels, or use my LBS (Perry Cycles in Woolwich). The wheels will be used exclusively for road riding
Opinions sought please.
Peace
Kurt
