Land's End to John O'Groats

  • I'm doing a ride from Land's End to John O'Groats starting next Sunday for the Bishop Simeon Trust. It's an awesome charity working to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa.

Long story short, if anyone could see there way to donating any amount they can afford at http://www.justgiving.com/rauri me, the Bishop Simeon Trust and HIV/AIDS sufferes in South Africa would all be most grateful!!!

You can follow a blog of the ride here http://bishopsimeontrust.wordpress.com/

  • This is not the Race Against Time, is it, Rauri?

  • I started it with a mate on Saturday. He planned the route and the stops and was far too ambitious. We planned 130 miles each day for the first two days and did 70 in the first, 90 in the second. Look forward to the hill exiting St Austell. I think it's about 11% at points. We had to pull out after the 2nd day. We decided to cut out losses and try again next year over more days and with about 10-15 riders and a support van.

    Good luck!

  • cornwall and devon are by far the bumpiest bits of Britain.....I took the 'easy' option and zipped up the A30 to Okehampton, stopping at Bridgewater on day 1. Not the prettiest of routes, but I just wanted to clock miles! Good luck Rauri, hope the prevailing wind is kind to you.....Scotland is spectacular, even in the rain!

  • Never made it that far into Devon, but it's certainly frustrating when you get to the top of a hill, and can't enjoy the coast down because you know at the bottom of the hill is another one you have to climb right back up.

  • Good luck Rauri, and chapeau for stepping into the breach and tackling this ride.

I'd talked to Charlotte back in the Autumn about joining the team but decided the amount of training needed to prepare for six consecutive days of 150 miles each was not going to work with family commitments. Then I heard about the two riders pulling out and nearly volunteered, but glad to see that Phil and you have taken up the challenge. I trust you will be using gears?

  • It is the Race against time oliver.

Will be riding with gears and looking forward to the undulating countryside!!!

Thank you for all your good wishes, feel free to donate http://www.justgiving.com/rauri

  • I was just wondering since I thought you were worried that you weren't fit enough--all the best, hope it's a blast!

  • I'm doing it in September for MacMillan. 11 days though so this pisses all over mine!

    Good luck

  • i am worried i'm not fit enought but figured there was only one way to find out!!

  • My friend Yushin did it in 10-ish days on a hybrid, with his right foot doubling as a front derailleur. Awesome.

  • Just got back, six days, 150 miles a day. My arse looks like the japanese flag!! Please sponsor http://www.justgiving.com/rauri

  • Fantastic ride.

Do you always wear your hat like that? (The Campag one, that is)

  • Mostly he does, yeah :)

    Pictures available here:

  • The hat is an essential part of the package, how it is worn depends on my mood, what specific look were you referring to?

  • hey congrats on doing this, im thinking of doing it in september and just wondering if there is a recognised route or anything ? did you do it fixed ?

  • I did it on gears because of the time constraint. There are a few books and things available with routes etc.

The route we did was mostly on A roads and so not overy sceneic again due to the time pressure
