  • I've seen it outside my gym in Barons Court before. Am I missing something? Does he change gears with his fingers?

  • just a cheap single speed conversion

  • It's just someone running a regular geared bike as singlespeed.

  • But do you not think on some level 'why bother'?

  • Why bother what? Running ill-maintained derailleurs when you could just take them off and have a perfectly (chain tension depending) fine single speed?

  • I did this part way through my conversion. Was waiting for a lockring and wanted to ride my bike.
    What's the big deal?

  • single speed conversion kits don't grow on trees you know !

  • It always warms my heart when I see this... I always imagine the thought pattern:

    "these gears are fucked.... fucken gears. You're fuckin GAWN gears!"

    Love it.

    with GM and time they will

  • I'm surprised you noticed anything past that NEON!

  • Like an afterbirth green, gorgeous....

    new keyboard plz, kthx

    4chan is that way ---->

  • 4chan is too weird for me

  • I did this to my road bike before the dropout was straightened. No way to ride it home otherwise.

    Tis a fine specimen that one - even got a neon strip on the seat

  • I did that with The Big Red One, for about an evening.

    I got the bike free, liked it, but bits started breaking and I couldn't be bothered to fix them because I'd planned a strip-down and rebuild. So I'd been running it in toppestmost gear for ages after the gear cable snapped and I got to like it.

    So then I decided to remove the drag from old deraileurs, shorten the chain etc. and took it for a test ride.

    Which was when I found the chain line wasn't quite perfect.

    I found that out, because the bike tried to skip down a gear, larger cog, no room from the newly-shortened chain, that pulled the not-completely-tightened-to-death rear wheel across til it rubbed on the inside of the chainstay and stopped dead, with me standing up, full weight on the pedal at the time.

    And then the chainring folded. :-(

  • Each to there own i suppose if they are happy with it that way, why not ?

  • 4chan is that way ---->

    Rules 1 & 2

  • Not surprisingly the old way of changing gear have to be done by a little system instead of a levers on the downtube or handlebar;

    Obviously I know this isn't what the bike the OT mentioned have, it just remind me of such device.

  • How did they deal with chain tension, Ed?

    i think i've seen one similar. it had a small pulley wheel mounted under the chain stay.

  • I've thought for a long time now that if a copmany was to launch a groupset with 2-3 gears it would be massively successful. Not a Sturmey Archer thing, but something as efficient as a road gruppo, but very, very simple and light. I'd buy one.

    Just get a good quality old 5-speed freewheel, nice derailieur and friction shifter.

    Golden setup, no adjusting ever, 100% dependable.

    note the dropout which have some kind of 'teeth' on it, when you want to change gear, says to a spinner one, you simply adjust the levers that not only move the chain up, but also move the wheel forward a bit to keep the chain tension tight enough.
