Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between invention (printing press) and discovery (electricity) - it's hard to say whether the wheel was discovered or invented ? - But here are my top 10 greatest inventions (not whether I like 'em or not, but simply their impact on makind).
Without a doubt number 1 - God
2 - mathematics
3 - language
4 - commerce
5 - television
6 - gun powder
7 - nuclear fission
8 - the internet
9 - the computer
10- the pub -

Language should totally be number one. How else can people preach about their gods. Or write maths textbooks.

Watched it the other day, loved it! Was highly amused by pubowners and people throwing ladies out then the issues with ladies clothing. But it was quite educating for a newbie.

surely 2 & 7 are discoveries rather than inventions. [not going to enter into a discussion on 1]
Not so sure, you might be right though, we are into murky philosophical/epistemological waters !?
:o
Mathematics is a language as much as English. (?)
Maths is the language we constructed to measure the world. (?)
You are probably right about 7 though.
