'GEEK'
Haha. Having said that I am posting on an internet forum that I've received a new mobile. I think I win the title in that case.

if you think there was a title up for grabs, you're more than winning in the geek stakes.
i, however, am merely knowledgeable in ancient greek mythology.

In rather a sad way it would be interesting to know what people use for mobiles.
I have an iPhone and a Blackberry Javelin for example.

Happy happy boy. It finally arrived today after many problems. And I've gotta say I can't believe the deal I got from Orange. It's a deal, it's a steal...
Look how beautiful she is, can't open yet as recharging unfortunately.
I feel like Tantalus.
Meh. Yeah it's OK, windoze mobile and all that. It's kind of exciting that you can control proper computers with it, like you can SSH and it actually supports PuTTY well.
Otherwise I'm not really impressed by it, or the iPhone or anything on the market right now. Which is why I'm waiting a while until I find something worth taking out a new contract for...

I got mine today HTC touch HD that is, got it for free on an upgrade from orange, just popped in to sort out my new contract expecting to get a shitty phone, I am seriously impressed.

Yah? Do you think I should get it? I should get it free from Orange too, just I'm thinking maybe wait until the next-gen... I am very much pleased by the idea that I can run putty and login to servers tho. Geek for sure.

it's pretty awesome hardware if you can tolerate WinMo.

Haha. Yeah, WinMo is sooooo shiiit! Fuck off, I don't get why everyone follows the sheep and just regurgitates all the crap they hear everywhere around them.
Windows mobile is not rubbish, there are plenty of ways of speeding the systems up (even Duttys roms are WinMo based). It strikes me that people who say that are incapable of a little thought and want everything thrown in their laps.
I've spent time with an iPhone and I couldn't live with it, too basic, soulless and stagnant.
I've had HTC's from the beginning when they were sold here only under Orange, from the first SPV. They are NOT difficult to use, if you are familiar with Windows then they make complete sense, granted at times they can be a little sluggish, but not to the extent that the things will stall (not these days anymore at least).
The connectivity/power/speed/capability of the current HTCs is almost unbelievable compared to the rest of the market. Touch flo3d has really sharpened up the face of the OS and hides some dated aspects of WinMo6.1 very very well.
But if you have a problem with WinMo6.1 then just flash 6.5. It's available everywhere.
I, however and downloading Dutty's
HD V3.4 XT SHIPAnd will report on it's quality, but judging by xda's response it's pretty damn fast.
I have kind of steped back on myself in this post, I see that and expect no retort.

Everyone says Windoze Mobile is crap, so is there a better alternative? The main thing that attracts me is that I can login to a linux shell pretty much out of the box.
Basically I want something that can connect to real computers, from what I have heard iPhone is not too good for that. Is there anything else on the horizon I should hold out for before taking another contract?

I think badtmy really knows what he's talking about when it comes to phones.

OK I have owned this for a while (broken one and had it replaced through insurance as well)
but here are some upgrades I have added which I think improves the phone
SPB mobile Shell - wow just wow, stunning useability and very customizable
S2U2 - a slide to unlock programme, very useful and smooth and easy to use, you can answer the phone while in this mode as well.
S2P - decent music software, very Iphone like which is ok as apple make decent MP3 players (well kinda)
google maps - a must
HD tweak - allows you to tweak your phone in the ways you wish were standard options.
and that is basically all I have running on mine, it is smooth and syncs well with computers.

I flashed the ROM on my Touch Pro today. Took it from WinMo 6.1 to 6.5, and gained a hell of a lot of features as well as finally smoothing out all of the issues I've had with earpiece volume. It's dead snazzy now.

I was tempted by one of these but probably gonna hold out for a Samsung Omnia 2

You're not a 12 year old hyperactive kid so you'll be fine. It's people who just decide to skip steps out or think they know what they're doing who fuck things like that up.
I flashed the rom on my O2 XDA2 (basically a HTC Polaris) and it was all good. Just find a step by step and follow it!

I'd seriously reconsider this. I took an Omnia back after about 2 weeks. It was just awful in every way. Maybe the next version will be better but there was just so much that was wrong with it I'd classify it as unusable.

Tried a demo Omnia 2 the other day, pre production but so much faster than HTC and some nitfy features.
