Solar panalled mosques are opening up in Manchester and Bradford...the Catholic church is buying up forests in Hungary to carbon offset the Vatican. Some religio-eco things are happening for political reasons, and other groups are honestly trying to re-incorporate a sense of the environement into their belief structure...

I wouldn't mind hopping on the tandem just for the experience of riding along with a stranger for a bit but I don't personally view cycling as an environmental act.. It's not like I'm planting trees or saving endangered species by cycling. If I wasn't cycling I'd be using public transport I guess but without me that would still run..
Why is not doing something harmful environmental and not just considered doing nothing?

Cycling is not carbon neutral and does cause an environmental impact. Bicycles need to be made and in many cases they or the materials from which they are made are transported around the globe. Tyres and inner tubes are consumables. Cyclists need to eat more than if they were inactive and frequently consume carbohydrate rich foods which need to be transported.
To be truly environmentally useful, one should dig a large hole with one's bare hands (no spades) and bury oneself.

Lay down on a compost heap and stay there until you've died?

Object, thank you for a helpful suggestion. I will start work on a compost heap this weekend and make it available to any environMentalists who wish to avail themselves of this ultimate symbol of their commitment to their cause.

Yeah, I'm gonna consume more and create an above average amount of waste by going on this trip. I plan to offset this by becoming sedentary in my thirties.

Carbon credits are another way of taxing you. I hope you won't be breathing out on the trip.
Ritual Ride will be an outrageous journey into the outer limits of Great Britain. Beginning on July 27th, 2009, Ritual Ride will explore various ecological sites via a 30 day 1000+ mile bicycle journey through the United Kingdom. Join the ride!
Ritual Ride will culminate with screenings of the documentary at “The Next 25”, on Climate Justice in Bristol Oct – Nov 2009
On July 27th a group will leave from Abbey Gardens (a green patch in Stratford which can't be developed due to the monastic ruins underneath), and head to a Monastery/farm in Essex. If you are interested in joining on this leg of the journey please email steven ounanian at diy@ritualride.com
Also, come to the pre-ride gathering which will take place on Sunday the 26th in Abbey Gardens. Map
Intuitively cyclists seem to know how biking is both a ritual and environmental act. This Ritual Ride is a chance to explore this idea through a modern day Pilgrimage.
