...know what you are saying Ed, and obviously there are situations where hearing will be of no advantage at all, however, riding on the road is risky enough without using all the faculties you have. Personally speaking, I'm uncomfortable blocking out sound and would rather be aware of traffic noise behind me or whatever.
Also, bear in mind people wearing headphones/earbuds or whatever are unlikely to be riding in zen-like silence... they'll be bombing along to some hipster soundtrack which definitely won't be helping them in the concentration stakes IMO
