my mum made a similar turn after hearing a report on fixed gear bikes from a regular ignoramus,
find someway to appease and reassure your parents, get a brake or helmet for the meantime and then lose them after a while.
don't offer to show them that you can come to stop faster than other bikes by lifting the rear wheel in the air. this will not/did not reassure.
