Because it's written in MS's immature Flash-clone. It should, probably, work in Moonlight on this Linux box, but it doesn't for whatever reason and in any case it's way more convenient to use mplayer and not have it tied to the other 30-odd browser tabs I have open. The stream itself is mms:// and coming from itv4's content delivery network, so is in all probability the identical same one underlying the web player.
Thinking about it, if I'd thought of it I could probably use mplayer's stream-dumping functions to make a recording too :-)
