i) "96% proof" is bollocks. either you are talking proof or ABV (i.e. % of alcohol)
ii), if you are talking ABV, 96% alcohol is not on your shelf at home. 'pure' alcohol/spirit is a max of 95.6% ABV as this is alcohol+water in its azetropic state.
