Stuck pedals

  • anyone know any secret techniques of getting pedals off? my pedals are being extremly annoying and will not come off

  • Yes, yes I do. Is this the drive side or non drive side crank that won't release the pedal? I can help you more with moar infos.

  • it seems to be both pedals, ive used a big wrench and alot of strength and it doesnt seem to want to come off

  • Make sure your turning them the right way, Good spray / soaking in wd-40, cranks off in a vice and hit a substansial spanner / wrench with a hammer, light heat with a blow torch. In that order of desperation.

  • put a long pipe (scaffold pipe for example) over your spanner for extra leverage

  • .

  • remember to loosen the left pedal clockwise (opposite way to normal)

  • ive tryed using wd 40, il try find something to use for more leverage ive never usually had this problem before with taking pedals off

  • Be absolutley certain you are turning the right way. Then persist with lots of leverage. If its impossible it may be work putting the crank in a vice for more stability.

  • when your trying to loosen them with the big pole / spanner try and slacken them with a jerk as this cracks (you'll hear it) the bond between the pedal and crank.

  • Proper pedal spanner and boiling hot water are your friends.

Boil the kettle, pour it gently over the crank and spindle and then, being careful of the hot crank arm, unscrew.

    It really is that easy.

  • Ok, this will get your non- drive side pedal off for sure.

IF you are going to use this trick, make DAMN sure that you are going to turn the spanner the right way, if you do this the wrong way and tighten it in even more it isn’t going to help much. Remember that left hand pedals have a left hand thread so undo clockwise. Most other threads are right hand and undo anti-clockwise…

If the crank is already off the bike then you can put the spanner on, then prop the spanner-crank-pedal assembly on the ground so it forms a little mound. Provided you have thought it through and propped them the right way up, a good stamp on the top will loosen the pedal off nicely. Note that it is a good idea to think about the floor underneath before doing this. It WILL get ragged.

If your drive side crank has a spider on it, it may be considerably more difficult to remove and I suggest using one of the many methods posted above, most of them have a resonable chance of success.

  • thanks for your help people i will try all of the above hopefully it goes well
