• Those bikes for £300+, I reckon I could build a better one for much less

So far I have spent £30 on a bike, £10/15 on paint stripping stuff and lacquer and all I need to do now is convert a wheel and get new inner tubes and tyres, which will be about £40 for a good set. I'm going to make my own rear wheel (can't see me spending more than £20 on this) and just shorten the existing chain.

Total so far: about £100. If I wanted it powder coated professionally (I don't) that's about another £50

DIY really is the way to go, I nearly got something through the cyclesheme because it would 'save' me a lot of money, but there's no need, making it yourself is fun, satisfying, and waaay cheaper, and what you get in the end can be fairly unique

    • tools. i had the same idea (after i turned down the angel fire idea) but didnt have any of the specialised kit. must have spent bout £50 getting pedal wrenches, socket wrenches, lock ring tools, oil/ grease, chain whips, etc etc. if youre a newbie (ahem) you forget all this. worth it though.
