So, I was doing the London Bikeathon with D. Generate, and was messing around doing long skids. On waterloo bridge (I think) in the bike lane on that green painted stuff, I skidded for ages.. big deal, on we cycled through Chelsea... then bang! Rear tire blew out, thought thats a bit strange, spun the tire round and :

MacGyver would have been proud. Quick mile and a bit cycle to Putney Bikes, one new tire and back on track.
Moral of story, don't mess around doing skids at the start of a long ride! (or carry spare tire)
