Regarding GPS navigation: as many of you have iPhones, maybe you will find this usefull.
On iTunes there is an app "Trails" that actually allows you to IMPORT route that you want to follow (other apps don't) - so you get a Garmin device for 2 pounds. Works very well, I have tested in on 4 long rides (including our recent L-Southend and L-Brighton) and it made navigation quite easy. What is more important I have never had a problem with signal - which many believes can degrade iPhone from being a navigating device.
