Your mate in a train?
Seriously, I think that all companies require it to be packed in a cardboard box. Get down to your LBS to get one of the ones they use for shipping.

Best bet is to persuade the seller to box the bike or take it to a shop and have it done.
Then arrange for a courier.
Plenty of cheap ones available.

You should contact a bicycle courier.

Mate, your talking about a frame, that's a van job. I can't give you a proper estimate as every job costs different depending on time, distence as well as loading and unloading time. Any courier company will do the job as you'll be paying them to do it. Only way to find out wether they'll take it in the condition you've specified is by calling and asking but can't imagine they'd worry too much as it's only going to put it in the back of a van.
Does anybody know of any courier companies that will take a bike relatively unpacked (wrapped and bound in a dust sheet and wheels taken off) from St Helens to London?
Any leads or help would be much appreciated.
