Yours is a 1975 Carlton Criterium. if memory serves it's a Worksop build.
This is what they looked like new. Hope the project is going well. The hobnobs were very nice.

Its a charge spoon I think
ha, double snap. i also have an old Carlton with a charge spoon saddle, but the model is a 'Corsair'.
i never expected there to be many Carltons around so it's nice to see some still going strong like mine. Didn't they get bought up by Raleigh in the late 70s?

Raleigh bought Carlton in 1960, with increasing use of Raleigh components on Carlton frames through the '60s & '70s.

Worn cotter pins?
-
• #65
i've worked it out - the cotter pins need to go into the cranks from opposite directions, ie. when the cranks are in a horizontal position insert one pin upways and the other downways, it just so happens that i put both cranksets on with the pins in wrong - a fine example of murphy's law! anyhow you can see my new colour in the photo, it's a car paint i got mixed - ford squeeze. it's a bright metalic green but still looks retro

that is a fine colour

i am waiting delivery on some rims i ordered off ebay from the usa, they're nearly here cos parcelforce just notified me that hm customs have them and want some vat and charges - so much for a bargin! anyhow can someone help me with spoke lengths? rims are by sun - swift sl1 700c 32 hole and i'm looking at system ex track hubs using 3 cross pattern

Can anyone tell me if this Carlton Criterium is a good buy at £50 with a view to converting to Single Speed?
Guy says it is a 22.5" frame.
Cheers

If the frame is your size and the seatpost and stem aren't seized then it's a deal.
It's much larger than 22.5

It's a Criterium from 1979-1981. 25.5in frame as you say, with alloy QR 27in wheels, Suntour gears and probably 531 tubing. Looks worth £50 to me!
