Look at your feet while you skid. Are you turning your feet inwards? This can lead to pain, and also unwanted unclipping. There is a chance that the pain is being caused by poor fit, and only exacerbated by the skidding. And finally, try to pull up only as a way of initiating the skid. Once the skidding starts, control it with pressure from your trailing foot.

If you are forcefully pulling up your foot (during skidding) - whilst your foot is attached to the pedal (via clipless), or whilst you are strapped in - you are exerting huge forces on the ankle joint whilst the joint is effectively in traction..... one part of your body is fixed to go one way, the other is being pulled in opposition.
The joint space is therefore increased, decreasing congruity between the bones - relying on ligaments and tendons to stop your rear tire...
Thats your problem, and my professional response should be - Stop skidding.
As a forum friend - Balance your weight distribution on both feet and do what Illy said. -

my ankle hurts from getting up from the sofa to go and make cups of tea.

I recommend a custom fitted sofa and ergonomic cups.

Don't pull up. Just push down with your back foot.
Gotta say this method works best for me, had ops on both knees and find this keps them working!

haha no, I meant this person I'm seeing. He drinks soooo manyyyyyyy T's!

If you are using clipless atm, where do you place your cleats? if you place them further back on the shoe you'll put less stress on the ankle.

if the pain persists use deep heat and ankle supports, I find they help much in keepin the joints toasty ;)
My chiropractor says deep heat is bad. Inflammation cannot be cured by more heat. It feels nice but retards healing.
Obviously this only applies to pain due to inflammation....

Correct, ice is a much better alternative, and some decent anti-inflammatory drugs will help to relieve the pain, but they won't fix the problem, you need to address your riding style, check your bike fit/set-up and most of all, you need to rest if you are injured to allow for recovery.

What have retards got to do with it?

retards heal slower due to lack of mental cells, search the internet if you don't believe me

Spare tyre is in the bag at all times- trying to get the most use out of the tyre as possible.
Looking enviously at other peoples tyres that seem to wear down more evenly- my Refuse has just thrown the tread off exposing more and more canvas.
Until you get a puncture from skidding. Don't carry a spare tyre, carry some strips of milk carton and some duck tape. Fix ride to destination, buy tyre and swap.

Is that a real tip? I always feel like Im binning tyres prematurely (or I blow them up in some incovenient place).
Dammit, what gearing is your bike incidentally?
-

The intention was to use the tyre until it blew, then swap it for the one in my bag.
Balki- 49/15, if I was able to skid with both feet forward it would give me 30 skid patches, as it stands I have 15, 3 of which I seem to hit all the time- which seems improbable, but there you go.

for injuries: deep heat = bad.
RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. -

Yep. Tyre off, find thin part of tyre / hole duck tape carton there. You have to ride carefully with the repair, but it will get you to work / home easy. When my tyre are getting thin I'll give them an inspection and may swap before a puncture but unless I'm off on a long ride I don't pay too much attention as long as I have a spare at home and the gaffa milk carton in my bag..

I'm not sure if I'm alone on this one....but my ankle is quite painful from all the skidding. Any of you out there have the same? I get usually on my "pull up" foot...Been trying out ways to fix it...double straps, placing strap higher up on my foot, and the best solution so far...clipless pedals...
you could always er, not skid and stop using resistance pedalling, could be a refreshing change?

Great tip Tommy! Reputation added.
Dammit, I experience the same thing. 17 skid patches, and 2 areas of utter destruction. Chain off, rotated the wheel and now I have 4 patches larger than the others. Odd. -
