try slowing down now and then ;)

brakes (before someone else says it) ;)

your pedal set up/ bikefit is probably all wrong, consult an experienced cyclist and show them your bike, and where your ankle hurts.
but this is merely an assumption, take what i say with a pinch of salt :)

well that and the tension skidding causes on your joints is going to cause pain
-
• #6
not in every case, i've never had a problem
-
• #7
high gear inches could be the problem, harder to skid, more stress on muscle.
-
• #8
Let your pain from your ankle not lead to any other problems as I have a buggered knee pain that won't shift which was the consequence of a foot injury.

that and maybe toestraps too loose, causing you to pull up harder and put more effort into catching your foot on the underside of the strap, therefore tensing your ankle muscles more than needed

Get fitter. Or in other words HTFU. (or buy brakes)

The answer is in the question, innit? Your skidding is excessive. Skid in more reasonable measures.
-
• #13
go and see a sports physio. they will be able to suggest ways of curing your problem.
-
• #14
if you think your skidding is excessive, don't do it as much.
and yes, as a result your ankles will be kinder to you.
-
• #15
Just keep at it. A disfigured ankle is the clear indicator of a top class hipster.

Maybe learn to skid both feet forward, I don't have a "pull up foot" so both feet share the load equally, fit some bmx pedals and some beefy ass straps, or big 4 gate clips with double straps, then you're spreading the load on your feet over a wider area and providing more leverage for skidding/stopping, therefore reducing the stress on your ankles/legs, the less effort required the better.

Don't pull up. Just push down with your back foot.

Fit a coaster brake.

Its only gay if you push back.

Balki- I'm down to the canvas in three places now, at what point do you recommend replacement, based on your "rooted" rear tyre?
-
• #21
Ha!
I thought you were carrying a spare tyre?
-
• #22
I replaced mine on tuesday after getting 3 punctures in 24 hours, annoying was not the word!
-
• #23
Spare tyre is in the bag at all times- trying to get the most use out of the tyre as possible.
Looking enviously at other peoples tyres that seem to wear down more evenly- my Refuse has just thrown the tread off exposing more and more canvas.

You must have weak ankles. Do some running.

Fit a coaster brake.
It's going to be all about the coasters for 2010. Ask !Nhattattack!
I'm not sure if I'm alone on this one....but my ankle is quite painful from all the skidding. Any of you out there have the same? I get usually on my "pull up" foot...Been trying out ways to fix it...double straps, placing strap higher up on my foot, and the best solution so far...clipless pedals...
