  • BDW, I've got series one and you'd be welcome to it, problem is the person who I've lent it too is taking a loooong time to get through it...I can try and hurry them up, jeez I seem to remember watching the whole series in two sittings..

  • I'm sorted cheers JimJams - Got a bit of catching up to do

  • I fucking love The Wire. I'm so disappointed now i've finished the 5th season... don't know what to do with myself. No other TV compares.

Even self abuse isn't as good after the Wire

  • Download The Corner - it's like methadone for Wire addicts. Only about 6 episodes mind. And is a very grim depiction of drug addiction, and plenty of skin-popping shots if you're the sensitive type.

I would recommend ep 6 of the corner. It is much rawer, but as I don't take the horse I'm not sure about the methadone metaphor. I didn't enjoy the Corner, just too grim and also rather clumsy in its camera work/direction/narration.

Wire fans will see the ideas that were later used in the Wire.

  • generation kill....that's where it's at now alledgedly. currently obtaining evaluation copies...

I had Wire loss to, it fades with time, but every time you start a new series "It's not as good as the wire"

Watching the corner at the moment, it's weird seeing some of the actors in hugely different roles

It's pretty good, and seems a fairly realistic scenario. requires a high level of tolerance of gung-ho, ultra-macho U.S marine types mind.

  • i reckon i can do that.

  • Generation Kill is on Bittorrent. Though good I never found it quite as gripping as the wire - partly because all men in uniform look the same to me.

  • i have heard of this bittorrent. much use it has been.

  • bbc2 showing wire from the beginning.

I think it starts within the next month, although I couldn't find a schedule/starting date

  • Is the Wire any good then?

  • it's the bee's knees

  • I shall watch it when it's on BBC2 then.

  • starts tonight, 2320 (after newsnight) every week day.

    Give it a few episodes.

  • I have all 5 seasons in .avi format if anyone wants. Obv. not HD but works fine full screen on my 24" iMac.

  • Im half way through series 1... Im finding it a bit weak.

    Stick with it - honestly.

  • Well, I dont have a choice. Finished series 2 of the original Star Trek last night so I've got nothing else :)

  • It's definitely a slow burner, suddenly you find you're hooked.

  • All you Wire mourners should HTFU and "source" Oz.

5 series of pithy observation on American penal correction.

  • Oz is good, but not a patch on The Wire. Gets too predictable and characters are introduced at the start of an episode only so they can be brutally murdered 40 mins later.

The Corner is the next step for fans of The Wire.

  • Oz > Wire

  • Oz first, then the Wire, logical progression.

I can't understand how people find it a slow burner. I was hooked from the start and am now putting of series 5 to prolong the joy.

Deadwood being used for intermediate relief.

  • The Corner is the next step for fans of The Wire.

The Corner is hard going, but worth it.

Generation Kill was also very good - more David Simon/Ed Burns but based on true stories from a Rolling Stone writer (Evan Wright) embedded in Iraq.
