half of them had brakes. Also nearly all of these guys are pretty serious road bikers too (with gears and brakes)

Of course, they wanted to do the Tour of California on fixed wheel bicycle, which is perfectly fine, and I admired them for doing it on a fixed wheel bicycle, but the point still stand, they will be faster and quicker on a geared, brakeful bike.

They'd also be much faster on a motorbike, in a car or in an aeroplane.

okay how that is an argument? we're talking about cycling, not motorised transport.
