  • Yea, just us old hippies... I'm surprised I remembered her name.

  • I've still to read her autobiography..

  • I was given Tim Hilton's "One more Kilometre and we're in the Showers" an he paints quite the tough portrait of old Beryl, a hard nut both on and off the bike (even to her daughter) but capable of warmth when not competing.

  • She was awesome in her day but how many of the forum have heard of her? 5%?

Time for more to hear about her, then.

The 'Super cool women doing neat things on bikes' thread has gone a bit quiet lately.

  • My dad was her mechanic in the 70s, I delivered her milk.

  • Nicole Cook is competing in a team event. Hoy and Pendleton for the most part compete in individual events. Peat always competes in individual events.

Nicole Cook will not win the worlds or the Gold at the Olympics until British Cycling produce a team that is strong enough to support her. At present she's in a class of her own and that makes her a natural target for every attack in every race at this level. she then has to cover all the attacks. It gives her no real chance since she's the only one with the strength to chase them all down. The rest of the women's team are just struggling to stay with the pace.

Quite amusing reading some of these posts back....

  • oh and sorry to actually make a post about the original topic......but Chris Hoy gets my vote ahead of Boardman, Robert Millar, then Beryl Burton. Cav is certainly getting there fast but need a little longer at the top and also needs to win the Green jersey in the tour first to have a real claim as that along with the world road race champs is the top prize for a road sprinter in my view.

  • Cook is by far and away the best British rider.

As good as Cooke is she has yet to win either Olympic or (senior) World Championship gold and that's how true greats are recognised in the UK at least.

    What are you guys smoking!

She is the current World Race Champion and Olympic Chamion! She has also won the UCI World Cup twice, Women's Giro at least once and the Grande Boucle Feminine (women's Tour De France) twice. Nobody from the UK can touch that record.

  • Check the date of the original postings you moron.

  • You tell him andy. ;-)

  • Ha

  • Oops my bad. Still Cook the best british rider of all time for me.

  • She's not even the best British female, that honour falls to Beryl Burton. And you can't spell her name, it's Cooke.

You're not having a good day really, are you?

  • Not been on the bike much this week Andy? I hope you are feeling better.

  • go on andy...

    feel your anger...yesssss, gooood......hahahahaha.....

  • I was just giving The Leek a bit of ball breaking. S/he probably doesn't deserve it, but I've been cooped up indoors for the last week so might be getting a bit antsy.

    Sorry dude.

  • Nope a shocker indeed. I have to say might be a bit biased coming from Wales but i think its nip and tuck between Cooke and Burton. Just a side note a nice little touch from Howies who have a little double page spread on Beryl Burton in their summer catalogue.

  • I'd say Burton's 7 world titles plus the fact that she was beating the best men of the day in time trialling just shade it. Hopefully Cooke can do well at this year's Worlds and add another rainbow jersey to her collection, to close that gap.

  • No point comparing, anyway. Both were/are great, and NC is still in the prime of her career. She'll most likely score a few victories yet.

It's a bit like those pointless comparisons between the second tier of the best male riders (Coppi, Anquetil, Hinault, LeMond) among the men, Eddy Merckx was so outrageously successful that he really hasn't been approached yet by anyone).

One good thing is that it's currently looking as if the women's competition is getting better again--there are 160 riders in the Giro Donne.

  • What about Jason Mcroy?

First British DH MTB rider to go Professional.

    Really depends on your criteria.

  • his career was a bit short though. I mean what if he'd faded into mediocrity.

Which reminds me I rode past the T-Rex crash scene today, makes you wonder how good/bad either of them had been if they'd got a bit longer.

Both crash sites are well maintained by fans.

  • you mean this tree, where the lead singer of T-rex died?
