Women's Hour on Cycling Safety

  • Heard this earlier on this morning and I thought that some of you lot may well find it interesting listening.

First segment of the programme, from about 1:05 onwards, concerning the 6/7 female cyclist's deaths on London's roads this year and why. Families of deceased, road safety people, and fellow cyclists join the debate.

  • I heard it earlier too. All smashing stuff apart from the usual "wear a helmet and hi-viz" nonsense instead of "ride where you can't possibly be unseen".

  • The most simple & effective things you can do in terms of cycling safely and confidently is ,

making sure you are far enough away from the kerb for cars to notice you and for you to be able to avoid potholes without swerving unexpectedly into the path of traffic.

And whenever you are at a junction or roundabout, take the position of a car. Be in the centre of the road not squashed into a side.

  • This is the Met Police video mentioned in the interview.
