Mike - Adam picked up some bamboo for me but he couldn't carry it all. Do you want me to paypal the money for the rest and post it? Or shall i just pick it up at the Cambridge tourney if you're going?

• #57
we could strap all the pieces together a get a really long bamboo pole and you can have the end piece?
-
• #58
Anybody built their's up yet? Any problems drilling or any other issues i should know about before making one?
-
• #59
Did anyone try heat treating it ?
-

Don't drill big. Smaller is better. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to reinforce it with some tape or inner tube or something...
Most of the ones I saw in Berlin had hockey tape wrapped up to about a foot above the head. -

I'll be in London around 2nd July, is it ok to collect it then Mike?
-
• #63
yep.

yeah what mike said!
also googled it...
When it comes to drilling the bamboo to join the pieces together always use a hss metal drill. Bamboo is extremely hard and will blunt an ordinary wood drill in an instant.
oh and just for a laugh:
http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-665.htmli like the bit about making a cot for his 6month old baby
I'd be pleased to correspond on the subject. Apart from my bamboo joint work I am currently designing a bamboo playpen for my 6 month old daughter as a matter of urgency. She's a holy terror already, fingers into everything. I also have a design for a traditional cradle and hammock in bamboo on the back burner.
sad....i'd actually be tempted to use em's wrap it in electrical tape and hammer the head on technique, to keep the mallet in place/ with a bit of epoxy too. i think drilling is a bad idea.

also cut a small slot in the bottom of the cane, and hammer in a small wedge.
with a bit of wood glue in there too yeah?
hows the horse polo mallets fixed?
oh and hi!
-
• #67
yup, they are wedged. glue it in.
and hi

i have this ace bit i got in Japan... its coned shaped so you can drill variable sizes depending on pressure.... bit like this...
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/15976/Drill-Bits/Specialist-Drill-Bits/Step-Drill-4-22mm
good for those random bamboo widths.
-
• #72
So you drilled those? How big of a bolt/screw did you use?
-
• #73
2, 50mm screws holds as good as it needs to i piloted them.
the bit i've got is a bit like a grinder tool so actually melts a hole... then you push the bamboo in and the plastic shrinks round it.
-
• #74
no need to drill bamboo, it makes it fail anyway. screw in the same hole as the bamboo goes into the head through. So the screw runs along next to the shaft, effectively wedging it in place.

Yo Mikey...any chance I could buy a couple of sticks please? What's the deal?
Borrowed one of Ray's on Sunday...felt poppy...kinda liked it, till I broke it.
Sorry guys. I'm not going to be able to make it out to polo tonight. Most likely not to Souths tomorrow night either.
