i had the misfortune of making a break from the group i was with, to do the last 40 miles solo.... got a bit lost about 10 miles from Dunwich , asked a farmer for directions, followed his directions for about 8 miles, found the A12, and also found a sign that said 'Ipswich - 2 miles'.at this point i had a little hissy-fit, cursed all farmers everywhere, and contemplated just going to Ipswich and getting a train, but i couldn't bring myself to it, and ended up riding the 20 miles to Dunwich along the A12 on my own in the pissing rain.
those 20 miles really sucked.

Ahh Fred - thanks for the light. You're a life saver. What time did you get in to Dunwich?
-
• #1079
no problem at all - though I've absolutely no idea what time I arrived. about the same as scott / tricity / pink and the crowd.
I was properly hosed by the last 15k. Fixed on a high gear meant I had to attack every hill like a complete nutter. Damn near killed me...

hah! I can see us taking a quick detour.
clefty: now is everyone strapped in and ready to go? good, then we're off
spaghettihoops: any chance we can take a quick detour via ipswich?
clefty: sure. Ooh look, there's a farmer waving at you, do you know him?
spaghettihoops: yep, he gave me directions last year... Fire in the hold!KA-BOOM!
:)
seriously, let's hire our own coach next year.

Coach? Pah. Dunwich is next to the sea, right? LFGSS 2010:

Forgot to mention - kudos to the chap I lent my lighter to at Great Waldingfield who tracked me down at Dunwich to return it. Most people don't bother doing that from one side of the pub to another ;-)

Yes yes yes yes yes yes.
£25 a head x 50 Forumengers (approx count this year) = £1250
I'm quite sure we beat that and lower the per head cost.

coach + furniture van?

Rough numbers. Even if we don't get lower the cost, the ability to leave at 11am rather than 1pm would make it worthwhile.

I won't quote you due to the length of post.
Everything you just said only goes to prove my point....you see them as 'Talentless people'....i see them as 'Novice cyclists'...there's a big difference.the best way to describe the novie cyclists is "remember, you used to be a novice before".

Speak for yourself.. I was born guru.
I certainly wasn't, but there's a big difference between novice and numpty.
Novices may not know to bring a headtorch or have another way of reading a routesheet in the dark whilst moving.
Numpties don't either, but something makes them ride in groups and come up to a junction and stop smack bang in the middle of the road without a signal or a shout and block the entire road.
The best numpty of the day/night was the guy who saw the grass outside the feed stop village hall was really busy so he decided to put his bike down on the road (well, it's nice and clear isn't it) and wander towards the queue for food. Someone got up and moved it at which point he got a bit shirty for someone touching his bike. "But you left it in the road". He stood there unthinking for a few seconds until a car went by, at which point it clicked and he moved it somewhere more sensible, mumbling a thank you.
Exhaustion (physical and mental) and sleep deprivation probably goes a long way to explaining how even sensible/experienced people become utter numpties when pushed. If you're not used to it then it can make you do some stupid things. As Oliver says, promoting this may not be in everyone's best interest.
Talentless may have been the wrong word but I was making a generalisation and, as I said before, I'm not trying to belitte the achievement of anyone who did it, only the things that some of the people did along the way.

Ha! Finally some evidence that the blue reflective tape on my rims really works :)

It's nearly as reflective as jonny's shoes.

i only wore those shoes in case all my batteries (and spares) packed up. anyone who crashed into the back of me would have a lot of explaining to do ;)
oh, and hippy I couldn't help but do a nice long skid as I pulled in at the food stop. i am sure most people were bemused as i reckon 99.9% of the DDers this year were on gears.

I shouted do a skid at you when you rode past me on the way back and didn't get one!
