Which chain tug?

Posted on
  • Could do with some help/advice

I normally use an 'on one' chain tug (http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ON%20ONE%20CHAIN%20TUG), but with my sexy new hub - (grand compe) there isn't enough room for the chain tug and the track nut, which means keeping chain tension is a pain etc etc

Any reccomendations for a slimmer/another chain tug?

    Thanks

  • MKS do different widths for track ends, and fixings. I prefer the ones you tighten/loosen with an allen key, much neater.

  • Any suggestions as to best ones to fit a Langster? I had the chain jump last night and lock the back wheel, fishtailed and came off on the wet descent.
    Boy am I hurting today.

Even though I give the wheel nuts lots of welly to tighten, they seem to loosen over time.

I used the 8mm MKS chain tug when I had my Tricross, which I think has the same (thick) track ends. You might need to remove one part of the steel reinforcing plate though. The MKS stopped the wheel movement straight away.

What you need is a thing called "maintenance" not chain tugs.

  • I have a pair of these for sale? In Black. £15

  • My rear wheel always creeps forward slowly in the dropouts, I did have one of those MKS tugs on but did not like the way it spread the dropout slightly.

Instead I now usually undo the nuts, roll up part of the Sunday paper, jam it between the wheel and the frame and tighten the nuts up. Then blow up the tyres, oil the chain etc.

Sunday maintenance with a cup of coffee, and it means that I don't get "slack chain- hah! hah!" comments.

  • dov, where are those lush allot tugs from? are they for forward facing dropouts ?

  • Let me know if you need some fat MKS tugs, I've got a couple knockin' about (you'll only need one for the drive side) BNWT MIB NOS etc... 12GN...

    Ouch. That hurts.

Actually one of the main reasons I run fixed is so I don't have to worry about maintenance...

  • Yeah but you should be checking your chain tension on a regular basis. Only takes a few seconds.

Bad luck fella. IMO tugs are not really necessary.

  • 26 quid for the MKS!!!!! take the 2 off and its expensive!

There might be less to maintain but what there is becomes more important.

  • all you have to do maintain on a fixed wheel bicycles is the chainset, that's all.

until belt drive become the norms, it's all you have to do, such a drag isn't it? simply not worth having a bike when you need to look after it!

  • my bikes are in need of some serious wrenching. maybe i'll do that this afternoon.

  • Hey I want to grab a set of tugs and just spotted these: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=20124&src=froogle

Has anyone used them? they look a little flimsey, but on the plus side extremely cheap and descreet.

  • the best full stop

  • Yeah I am tempted but I need to pick a couple other bits but and short on cash and all other chain tugs are half the price

  • half the price, buy twice

i got one you can have for a couple of beers
will be at west beers tonight.
    no posting collection only

  • Thanks 31trum, I am busy tonight but do work in South Ken so should be able to collect another night for some beers?

  • yeah, same place next week

  • cool thanks, see you there next week.
