The clue was in your own question.
Wire cutters won't cut cable. Well they will. But you need a hammer. Seriously.
Alternatively, for hassle free cable cutting:

Blunt force will cut cable with wire cutters. Get a good grip on the cable then hammer down on the business end. A couple of big hits and the cable will snap with a very clean cut. Not as ideal as cable cutters but if you need to cut in a hurry then it will work. I've been doing it for years.

Being a guitar maker I have a set of string cutters around the workshop. They work great for both inners out outers ;) The bass specific versions are especially good.
There's one with a built in string winder!

+1 to the hammer method, I just use a normal pair of pliers with the wire cutter part in the middle and give it a good whack with a hammer. Cable cuts super clean and no extra tools are required.

i bought some bb (or is it bbb) cable cutters, they are bloody powerful, its just a little snip compared to all the fuss you have to go to with hammers etc, definatley worth the £20

Dremel & cutting disc. Very handy tool for lots of jobs.

Good tip if you're using blunt cutters or a tool that isn't really designed for the job is to wrap some electrical tape round the cutting area first. Helps prevent the cable from fraying/splaying.

Knipex are the only ones that work all the time. About 20-25 quid but mine still cut perfectly after 10 years or so. (No more frayed ends ever....)

Fairly cheap diagonal cutters from Screwfix.com - will cut through all sorts of things. Even a cable lock (eventually, after much nibbling) after a friend had a key-loss incident. I think they were four quid.

Cut the outer with a little bit of inner sticking through where you're making the cut. Stops the outer crushing.

Hi all,
Ive just bought a new set of what i thought were heavy duty wire cutters, however they just cant get throught the inner or outer brake cables.
Can someone recommend a set of wire cutters that are fit for this purpose?
thanks
