  • Hi Guys,

so i have a series of G5's and I am not using all of them, so want to set 2 out of 3 off. They are all very useful and fully specced up for the film game. Full CS3, FCP and maybe even MAYA 3D if you go for the right machine.
Thing is i want rid of the whole suite so want rid of the monitors too.

I'm looking for between 1200 and 2000 depending on which machine you go for. More specs availible on request. It's a fairly flexible thing with the ram and other things. But i'll need a few days for data transfer and porn deletion.

    PM me if your interested

  • I'll buy the lot- will a bouncing cheque do?

  • Can you ship to Lagos, Nigeria?

  • yes but only if you produce a picture of your self with a halibut on your head standing on a chair.

  • I'm intrested, but the deletion of porn worries me

Can you state what you would sell DAVE for (smut inclusive)

  • Ffrom the apple store you can get:

    One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    3GB (3x1GB)

    640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB

    One 18x SuperDrive

    Apple Mighty Mouse

    Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

    for 1899£

these are price for a NEW machine not a obsolete G5's and even if they look pretty much similar, they have BIG differences in the case structure/design, engineering of motherboards and so on.
Not just in the speed / performance of the machine itself (or the name).
They also emit so much heat from the fans, while they are doing the same amount of work a new macbook pro can do easily.

I'm not trying to be bitter or something, but selling your 1.1 g5 POWERPC ( is not even INTEL processor so not good for new software or to run windows) for 1200/2000 £ sounds to me a bit pricy.
Even if they have 2 or 4 processors (not compatible with all the software anyway) are still slower than 1 2.66GHz Quad-Core Xeon
Same for the ram, no even after effects is compatible with 8Gb of ram, so pretty much useless to have it, if not using a compatible and specific software.

Just my opinion, of course and again i'm not intending to offend anyone, but I wanna advice someone that might be interested and not too much into Mac as I am (but looking at the case might think: oh is like the new ones !)

I think that personally i would suggest whoever will buy them not to spend more than 600£ collected. But again I would buy a G5 only for a very specific use, as those are very pro machines and not versitle at all (heavy, noisy, heat emitting etc.) and even if obsolete atill good to do some job (running music software etc, video editing etc, but not in my lounge or bedroom)

Just a thought to be helpful to the ppl on the forum, again, not trying to offend Skoota here.

  • i have to say i had similar thoughts about the pricing but mainly about the software, unless it's licensed copies of cs3 etc they effectively add no value imho.

this website is a very good online guide for secondhand mac pricing

  • its not TOO far off the mark... g5s are still quite good for video if you're editing & processing HD tv stuff (as you mention edy)...

refurbed g5s go for around 1200 it seems:

ebay may be cheaper but you don't get security of buying from a forum member...

plus it seems final cut pro is installed (which version though??) which is about 800£ in the store. and cs3... even if you were to ''download'' these programs that is A LOT of effort (fcp is like 60gb of DVDs...)

    my 2c

  • Corrrrrr.... talk about a black eye!

I agree with a lot of what edy says, but 600 is wayyyyyy too little, although the G5's are obsolete they are still good 'ol work horses, you'll find them in near every design/film studio still. Calling them "not very versitle (sic)" is a bit of stretch, they are just a touch on the large side...

Oh and the decrepit G5 that is sitting next to me atm is silent....

Just trying to give a balance of opinions....

  • No G5 is worth more than £800 imo. (Pirated software or not.)

They may be workhorses at the moment, but they are showing their age and are no longer supported (An intel machine could run for 10 years+ and is up to 85% faster than a G5).

  • hey braker, if you want to chat pm me your number and i can give you a low down on all the specs.

  • oh and edy, a new machine comes with only the os and zero ram, thanks for the essay though.

  • I bought a refurbished quad intel from apple **2 Years **ago for £1100.
8GB of RAM for a modern Mac Pro cost about £200 and the base models now come with 3GB..so
    a bit more than zero.
    A G5 is a serious dead end.

  • g5 is great but for £1200 to £2000 , way too much ! i bought a quad 2.5 for £800 last week on ebay and its a great machine ...............

  • it would be even better with monitors, ram and lots of software i suppose, near on worth 1200

  • would you sell a monitor on its own ? i may be interested !

  • not unless someone else only wants a machine.

  • ok good luck .........havent seen any sell for muc

  • i conclude- havent seen any sell for much more than £800 except full refurbs ....

  • not meaning to shit on this thread anymore - but you are asking way too much. Mac2sell is pretty much the industry standard for working out how much 2nd hand mac's are worth so I would just price them accordingly.

Of course, if you are including monitors then you should show photo's and spec (and be honest about dead pixels/marks etc).

6months ago I was offered an almost new quad intel mac pro for about 1600

  • i clearly stated that if interested you should pm me, so mr/ not want to shit on anyones post, why don't you just not post. If i look at something in the classifieds and i think its too much / out of my price range i don't buy it, i don't add flame to an already balanced set of numbers. Bell end

  • not meaning to shit on this thread anymore

    But you shit anyway...

  • chill out

  • But you shit anyway...

    Maybe he accidentally shat?

there was a boy like that a my school... you should feel sorry for him really.

  • chill out

bugger off back to your column
