Definately worth the extra, surf rash vests are cheaper but tend to keep in sweat to help heat the body in water, mma ones repel the sweat which is super helpful. I also find that when I don't wear one I get a lot of 'lovebite' looking bruises (burst blood vessel type) to my collarbone and chest from the gi lapel being pulled and rubbed on me a lot and the rash guard stops that.
