If safety is your concern then I reckon the first thing he could do is take his iPod off whilst riding:(
Just by sheer coincidence I saw him at exactly the same junction which saw me get sideswiped by angry motorist a few years ago whilst on my De Rosa(Fortunately only the bike and not me got damaged) and images of bike/car accidents did flash before my eyes.
